CGD financial literacy programme : Saldo Positivo case

In 2008 Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) launched its financial literacy programme, Saldo Positivo website in http://saldopositivo.cgd.pt/. Its purpose was to help consumers managing their personal budgets and simplify financial language. CGD aims to help Portuguese families to make the best financial decisions in their day to day life. More recently, it has created a similar site focused on the SME business point of view, Saldo Positivo Empresas in http://saldopositivo.cgd.pt/empresas/

Caixa Geral de Depósitos: Young VolunTeam Programme

Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) is strongly committed to new and innovative projects in the area of corporate social responsibility. In 2012, among various initiatives in other fields of corporate social responsibilty, CGD launched the Young VolunTeam Programme. The aim of this programme is to increase volunteering amongst young people in Portugal. Therefeore CGD partnered with prestigious and knowledgeable organisations with expertise in the field of sustainability consulting and volunteer promotion, in order to educate pupils on this matter by providing them with training and guidance.

CGD and the Hypercluster of the Sea Economy

Caixa Geral de Depósitos has been strengthening its position as a bank that promotes and encourages the development of the sea economy. From the R&D point of view, Caixa collaborates with universities through a set of initiatives that range from support of incubators to the creation of the CGD - Sea Studies chair, which was launched in partnership with the University of Aveiro. Our initiatives aim to sensitise new generations and open up the portfolio of professional graduates, contributing to their professional future.

CGD Employees: More than 33 thousand hours of volunteer work in the European Year of Volunteering

Employees of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) surpassed the challenge proposed for 2011 of 20 thousand man hours in volunteer activities throughout the country, as part of the European Year of Volunteering. In all, Caixa’s employees accounted for more than 33 thousand hours of volunteer work, including environmental protection activities and interaction with communities, such as supporting disadvantaged and/or disabled citizens and cleaning beaches.

Implementation of CGD commitment to sustainable development

FLORESTA CAIXA

Floresta Caixa (Caixa Forest) is CGD’s structured involvement with Portuguese indigenous forests, through plantation and awareness building activities since 2006. Its main objectives are environmental sustainability; recognising trees as one of the fundamental elements for the survival of the species and the balance of ecosystems and the resulting continuity of future generations; compensation for GHG emissions resulting from CGD’s activities; see children as leaders in the defence of forest heritage and biodiversity; positioning the Caixa brand among younger customers and their parents, through environmental responsibility perceived in CGD’s activity and the concern for leaving a legacy for the future of each child customer.

CGD Carbon Calculator

The CGD Carbon Calculator is a tool that allows each citizen to calculate his or her carbon footprint, and to analyse options for reducing it. In other words, it is possible to measure the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with day-to-day activities. The CGD carbon calculator thus serves an educational purpose, facilitating the quantification of emissions associated with users’ day-to-day activities and presenting specific solutions to reduce these emissions, calling upon them to make a personal commitment to take action in combating climate change.

In 2011, Caixa Geral de Depósitos Group was considered the “Most Sustainable Financial Group in Portugal”. The purpose of this award granted by the magazine 'The New Economy', in the scope of the 'The New Economy's Sustainable Finance Awards' initiative, is to recognise banks and financial institutions that demonstrate leadership and innovation, at an international level, in the integration of social, environmental and corporate criteria in their course of business.

CGD receives Prime status in OEKOM’s Corporate Rating

CGD was evaluated by Oekom, a German corporate sustainability rating agency, as best in class in the financial sector at the international level. The rating assigned is yet another accolade for CGD's sustainable performance and the commitments it has been making to the future, for the benefit of coming generations, society, the national economy and environment, strengthening Caixa's role as a legitimate ambassador of the Portuguese financial sector in the application of best international management practices.

The Caixa Carbono Zero (Zero Carbon) programme is a strategic project, cutting across all the Bank’s activities. Its mission is to simultaneously take responsibility for reducing own emissions; meet the challenge to market new financial solutions to facilitate access to low-carbon goods and services; promote, with a wide range of target audiences, knowledge on the subject and adopt behaviours that reduce the energy and carbon intensity of their activities.

Caixa Carbono Zero (Zero Carbon) programme: Dia-a-dia Carbono Zero (Day-to-day Zero Carbon)

Day-to-Day Zero Carbon offers a set of good practices that contribute to reducing emissions that can be adopted by all of us in day-to-day life, whether at work or at home. All photos illustrating Day-to-Day Zero Carbon portray real situations of the Caixa employees, Divisions and Companies of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Group involved in this project. All the children pictured are the sons and daughters of Caixa employees.

Caixa Geral de Depósitos Social Bank and Caixa Fã Fund

Since 15 July 2010, Caixa has been the Official Bank of the Social Stock Exchange (BVS), which replicates the environment of a Stock Exchange, facilitating the meeting between civil society organisations and social investors willing to support these organisations through the acquisition of their shares.
The main objective of the Caixa Fã Fund is to support structural projects undertaken by Civil Society Organisations with the credibility and capacity to ensure the implementation, maintenance or expansion of projects falling within the areas of Social Responsibility and Sustainability.

Caixa Geral de Depósitos - Design Bank

The annual Caixa Geral de Depósitos Design Contest falls within the scope of CGD’s social and environmental responsibility policies, its main objective being to contribute to the preservation of natural resources through the promotion and facilitation of alternative design and production. The main concept of the contest is “Making the Old New”. The contest requires the use of recycled and/or recyclable materials to produce objects that embody social, environmental, economic, educational and civic concerns.

Environmental Policy
