MONTEPIO: performing fundamental economic and social functions

MONTEPIO, founded in 1840, is a Portuguese mutual association known for its recognized solid brand, for its historical foothold on mortgage and credit to real estate developers, as well as for its promotion of social well-being and values.
MONTEPIO, founded in 1840, is a Portuguese mutual association known for its recognized solid brand, for its historical foothold on mortgage and credit to real estate developers, as well as for its promotion of social well being and values.

MONTEPIO founded four years later, in 1844, the oldest portuguese savings bank – Caixa Económoca Montepio Geral - and has performed across its existence fundamental economic and social functions for all its 580.000 members and almost 1.500.000 costumers.

MONTEPIO with the Caixa Económica Montepio Geral (CEMG) ranks 6th among Portuguese financial institutions, has more than 450 retail banking branches and offers a wide range of products and services, supported by MONTEPIO group subsidiaries.

Showing strong organic growth, MONTEPIO sums 22 B€ Total Assets; 1,5 B€ Total Equity and stronger Capital Ratios, in line with the goals for the financial system.

MONTEPIO has acted as a mutual benefit association and set itself apart from the other institutions in the market since it is 100% held by Mutualist Association. In recent years MONTEPIO reinforced its positioning as a mutualist based institution and further attracted mutualist members – 580.000 members by 2013 year end.

Regarding Business Responsibility, MONTEPIO’s principles - common purpose, responsible finance and strong leadership - are the bridge that connect our 170 years of history with the future we want to create. MONTEPIO’s legal nature – private institution of social solidarity - has been a leverage to conquer new segments of the social sector. Beginning in 2009, MONTEPIO strengthened its commercial relation with the Social Sector - a department specialized in clients of NGO, cooperatives and social institutions was created.

In 1995, MONTEPIO created a Foundation, whose mission is developing the MONTEPIO Group´s social responsibility program, representing it in Portuguese and international organizations. Social solidarity activities have been undertaken by MONTEPIO Foundation, which plays an essential role as an organization, forming relationships and channeling support to the community from its own annual budget and voluntary donations from personal income tax transferred by the tax authority.

MONTEPIO continuously participates in several events in order to publicize its social responsibility work and also guarantee active participation in bodies, such as Grupo de Reflexão para a Cidadania Empresarial (GRACE), Junior Achievement, Centro Nacional de Fundações, the European Savings Bank Social Responsibility Committee, Associação de Responsabilidade Social Portugal, Rede Local de Ação Social de Lisboa and Conselho Português para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (BCSD).

Democracy, local responsibility, contribution to economic development have always been solid bases in group practices.
