CGD and the Hypercluster of the Sea Economy

Caixa Geral de Depósitos has been strengthening its position as a bank that promotes and encourages the development of the sea economy. From the R&D point of view, Caixa collaborates with universities through a set of initiatives that range from support of incubators to the creation of the CGD - Sea Studies chair, which was launched in partnership with the University of Aveiro. Our initiatives aim to sensitise new generations and open up the portfolio of professional graduates, contributing to their professional future.
The Sea is a frequently discussed subject, concerning the many opportunities it offers for the country’s economic development, particularly in the context of the unfavourable economic situation we are going through. In addition to more traditional activities such as maritime transport, fishing, naval construction, fish processing and tourism, the Sea today offers a range of subsectors that contain great potential for growth, and the opportunity for creating new businesses in energy production and exploration (in nearshore and offshore wind and wave energy), the high technology submarine exploration equipment industry, aquaculture and maritime biotechnology.

As part of its policy for sustainability and support for entrepreneurship, Caixa Geral de Depósitos has been strengthening its position as a bank that promotes and encourages the development of the sea economy. From the R&D point of view, Caixa collaborates with Universities through a set of initiatives, that range from support to incubators to the creation of the CGD - Sea Studies chair, which was launched in partnership with the University of Aveiro. Our initiatives among the youth and university students have the aim of sensitising new generations and opening up the portfolio of professional graduates, contributing to their professional future.

For Portugal, it is important for us to be able to value this tradition, to create new technologies, and use that innovation in contributing to the country’s development. In response to this plan, Caixa Geral de Depósitos values the Sea’s strategic potential for Portugal, as a vital resource and an undeniable mark of identity.
